REVELATION CHAPTER 1
The Revelation of Jesus Christ: It is Jesus who is being revealed, not John. Many Bible scholars refer to the writer of this book as "John the Seer" since he was able to see the future. The Koine Greek word for this special book is apokalupsis , and it's where we get the English word "apocalypse" from. However, the similarities stop there. This book is not title "the nuclear explosion" or "the ripping apart of mankind". Rather, the word simply means "discovery" or "revealing".. get it? "Revealing" is where we get the word "Revelation"). It's as if you were seeing a theater curtain draw back so you could see the play. It's like your opening up of the oven door to see the dinner baking, or to open a treasure chest in order to see what's inside. When we open this book, what is revealed? The true Jesus.
Which God gave Him to show His servants things which must shortly take place: God is giving His children - the ones who serve and follow Him in salvation - a clear explanation of the mysteries of the future. This is a powerful Koine Greek phrase: en tachei. (We get the word "tachometer" from it, maning the speed of engine RPMs) It means ” ‘quickly coming,’ The use of these Greek phrase doesn't mean "it's going to be coming up soon on the calendar". REVELATION CHAPTER 2
Jesus writes to seven churches. The number seven is the number of completion, so we get the hint that this is a complete message to the entire world of believers - not only from the time of the first century, but also to the Christians today. Don't limit the word "church" to just a building with pews and a pulpit; it's talking about the worldwide family of Believers who will be heading to Heaven one day, but have a mission on Earth right now.
1 To the angel - We are not sure who this particular angel is - or any of the angels in this passage for that matter. Does it mean the "messenger" of the church ("angel" actually just means "messenger") or does it mean an actual angel who watches over the assembly? We are not sure, but we do know that the intended audience comprises of the Believers in that region. There is an important message that all of them - and us - must hear.
